Turkey is a secular country, and strongly separates religion from state practice. But many Turks argue that it's time this secular model separating religion and the state was abandoned; Islam is not a threat to national security, and the government's current policy risks undermining democracy itself. With Turkey desperate to join the EU, it must improve its human rights record and reduce the influence of the military on the state. Yet, now of all times, it is reluctant to compromise state security. The question is: how best to manage the fine balance?
