Let’s Eat is a 8 minute animated short film that centers on the relationship between a mother and daughter in a Chinese-American immigrant family. Let’s Eat strives to be a universal story told through a distinctly Asian-American voice.

As a single parent in an unfamiliar country, Ma’s entire life centers around raising Luan, her rambunctious young daughter. Likewise, Luan spends her childhood indulging in endless quality time with her playful, loving mother. However, as Luan grows up, it isn’t long before daily life interferes and causes mother and daughter to grow apart. By channeling their feelings into cooking, the two strive to find their way back to each other, one homemade meal at a time.

Ma and Luan’s tale touches upon mother-daughter relationships, the American immigrant experience, and the unspoken translation of love into food - familiar themes reflected through a fresh perspective often overlooked in mainstream media. We at Anamon Studios aim to share in our similarities as much as we celebrate our differences, and to this end we hope that Let’s Eat will resonate with audiences of all backgrounds and experiences.

What are the benefits of an exercise program?
In this video we are going to look at some of the major benefits, both physical and metal, that an exercise program can bring to your life. Let’s start with the physical benefits.

A. Physical benefits.

1. Cardiovascular and respiratory improvement
Over time, you end up strengthening the cardiac muscle that surrounds your heart, you also pump a greater volume of blood with each stroke, which causes a decrease in resting heart rate. You develop more red blood cells which improve your ability to bring oxygen to your muscles, and your lungs become stronger and better at supplying your body with the oxygen it needs.

2. Reduction in health risk factors
Regular exercise can reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease, developing type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. Research also shows active people have a lower risk of colon and breast cancer. Regular exercise can also increase your chances of living longer.

3. Increased metabolic rate
Metabolic rate is the rate at which your body burns calories. During exercise, you obviously burn more calories than when at rest, however, your metabolic rate at rest is enhanced even after your workout session is completed as your body uses energy to repair muscles and replenish atp storage and glycogen storage. This does depend on several factors, including the intensity of the exercise and your current fitness level.

4. Decreased risk of falls
Incorporating balance, coordination and muscle strengthening activities into your exercise program can improve your motor skills thus reducing the risk of falling.

5. Bone health improvement
Impact activities such as plyometrics and jumping, and resistance training can slow the loss of bone density that comes with age. Playing sports that involve running and jumping can be advantageous as well.

6. Weight loss and reduced obesity
Physical activity can be a key part of a complete weight management plan to avoid excessive fat gain, and to maintain a healthy weight. Regular exercise burns more calories, and increases muscle mass, both of which are key to weight loss and weight maintenance.

B. Mental Benefits

1. Increased feelings of well being
Exercising enhances the action of endorphins and enkephalins, which improve natural immunity and reduce the perception of pain. Regular Exercise can also improve mood, feelings of having more energy and overall quality of life.

2. Better sleep
Research has shown that regular exercise helps people fall asleep faster and enjoy a deeper sleep. It can also improve sleep duration, and decrease middle of the night wake ups providing a better overall sleep quality.

3. Better brain function
Regular exercise can reduce fatigue, improving alertness and concentration. Physical activity improves blood circulation, which delivers oxygen to the brain at a faster pace, which leads to sharper thinking.

4. Increased self esteem
Regular exercise can improve your body shape, increasing your confidence in your appearance, thus increasing your self esteem. Exercise also promotes a sense of accomplishment, which can increase your confidence in taking on other tasks in your life.

Race impacts health outcomes. In Minnesota, only 22% of Somali immigrants have been screened for colorectal cancer, compared to 40% of those born in Laos and 70% of white patients. Only 25% of Native Americans are receiving optimal diabetes care, compared to 27% of African Americans and 41% of white patients. The mortality rate for African American infants born in Minnesota is double that of white infants.

In “Barriers, Trauma, and Fear” we look at the experience of visiting the hospital through the lens of racism, bias, and fear.

Hello friends welcome to a new happy learning video. Today we are going to learn a bit more about healthy eating, something very important to all of us. We already know that healthy foods are fundamental for our existence, they help us to grow, be strong and be healthy! To eat healthily, one must learn about the variety and quantities of the food we eat. We need to learn about the food pyramid and follow its steps!
Here it is:
The first step on the pyramid, the smallest one, is the one about fats and sweets. It is the favoured one by all children, but to be honest, it is the worst one. One must eat very little or nothing from this step. Pastry’s and sweeties are delicious but they contain a high number of calories, which are very bad for our body. They make us fatter and don’t help with anything. In fact, many doctors agree that this sector is very bad for our health!
The second step is formed by meat, fish and eggs. It is very important to vary these foods every day. You shouldn’t just eat meat because you don’t like fish. In fact, we should eat more fish and eggs than meat!
The third step is all about dairy. This group consists of milk, cheese and butter. I especially love yoghurts. We must eat these foods from one to three times a day!
The fourth step is extremely important because it evolves around fruits and vegetables. These foods fill our bodies with vitamins and minerals and allow us to stay in shape and be strong. Doctors recommend to eat these 5 times a day, if you do your body will thank you!
The base of the pyramid, the fifth step, is the group of the carbohydrates. Here you can find cereals, bread, pasta rice and potatoes. They are also very important so we must eat them daily.
As well as following the different steps in the pyramid, we need to take into account the advice of doctors and nutrition experts. One must try to eat at the same time every day, eating with family will always be beneficial, and also drink plenty of water! But most importantly, every day we must do some kind of physical exercise.
If we eat healthy and do exercise we will grow strong both mentally and physically! So now you know!

Diabetes researcher Michelle Hadjiconstantinou has combined science with art to produce a powerful awareness-raising message for World Diabetes Day.

The University of Leicester PhD student, who is based at the Leicester Diabetes Centre, turned to her artistic side to create a short animation aimed at highlighting the challenges posed by Type 2 diabetes.

The project was completed as part of Michelle’s doctorate into developing web-based interventions to improve the wellbeing of people with Type 2 diabetes and has been released for this year’s World Diabetes Day.

The film, which is based on findings from published research and describes what happens to the body when people get the condition, including the physiological changes. It also looks at how diabetes impacts on wellbeing as well as covering medication, self-management, diet, sedentary behaviour and physical activity.

These are the anti-inflammatory foods I eat every week to reduce inflammation in my body. An anti-inflammatory diet can help with reducing joint pain and arthritis, healing the gut (key if you have celiac, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's or IBS), getting rid of eczema and psoriasis, and keeping other autoimmune conditions such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis in check. It's also beneficial if you suffer from anxiety or depression.

I became well versed in wholesome, anti-inflammatory foods several years ago when I embraced a whole foods diet. After being diagnosed with four autoimmune diseases in two years I realized my body was fighting massive immune system inflammation and I needed to provide reinforcements. Those reinforcements came in the form of groceries.

Diabetes refers to a group of conditions characterized by high levels of blood glucose, commonly known as blood sugar. Glucose comes from digestion of carbohydrates in food, and is carried by the bloodstream to various body tissues. But glucose cannot cross the cell membrane to enter the cells on its own; to do so, it requires assistance from a hormone produced by the pancreas called insulin. Binding of insulin to its receptor on a target cell triggers a signaling cascade that brings glucose transporters to the cell membrane, creating passageways for glucose to enter the cells. In most tissues, muscles for example, glucose is used as an energy source, while in the liver and adipose tissue, it is also stored for later use, in the form of glycogen and fats. When the body is in the fasted state, the liver produces and secretes glucose into the blood, while adipose tissues release free fatty acids to the liver where they are converted into additional metabolic fuel.
Diabetes happens when insulin is either deficient or its action is compromised. Without insulin, glucose cannot enter the cells; it stays in the blood, causing high blood sugar levels.
There are 2 major types of diabetes. Type 1 is when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin; and type 2 is when the body’s cells do not respond well to insulin - they are insulin-resistant. Both types are caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors but genetics plays a major role in type 1, while lifestyle is a predominant risk factor for type 2. For this reason, type 1 diabetes usually starts suddenly in childhood, while type 2 progresses gradually during adulthood, going through a so called pre-diabetic stage, which is defined as borderline blood sugar levels. Pre-diabetes is very common. Unhealthy lifestyle is the trigger of pre-diabetes and the main driving force behind its progression to diabetes type 2. The key factors are obesity and physical inactivity.
There are at least 2 ways by which obesity can cause insulin resistance and high blood glucose.
First, in obesity, fat cells have to process more nutrients than they can manage and become stressed. As a result, they release inflammatory mediators, known as cytokines. Cytokines interfere with the signaling cascade by insulin receptor, blocking the action of insulin.
Second, excess adipose tissue releases abnormally large amount of free fatty acids to the liver – an event that normally happens only when the body is fasting. This tricks the liver into producing and releasing more glucose into the blood. High blood glucose stimulates further insulin secretion. Constant high insulin levels de-sensitize body tissues, causing insulin insensitivity.
Intra-abdominal fat appears to produce more fatty acids and cytokines, and therefore has more severe effect on blood glucose, than subcutaneous, or peripheral fat. For this reason, large waist size is a greater risk factor than high body mass index.
Sedentary lifestyle, apart from having indirect effect by causing weight gain, has its own direct impact on insulin resistance. This is because physical activity is required to maintain healthy blood sugar levels. Physical activity increases energy demand by the muscles, which consume glucose from the blood, and subsequently from glucose storage in the liver and adipose tissue. High energy expenditure helps to clear up faster the spikes of blood glucose that follow every meal. High energy demand also promotes better cellular response to insulin, increasing insulin sensitivity. Physical inactivity, even for a short period of time, results in consistently higher spikes of blood sugar after meals, which can trigger pre-diabetic changes in healthy individuals, or speed up transition from pre-diabetes to diabetes. This happens not only to over-weight patients, but also to people with seemingly healthy weight.

How to start a healthy lifestyle

You’ve been telling yourself you want to live healthier, but you have no idea where to start! The good news is that you don’t have to spend thousands of dollars on a private chef and personal trainer to live a healthier lifestyle. It starts with just a few little changes that you build upon day after day.

Sure, there are guys named Fabrice who charge 1000 English pounds per hour to whip your body into shape while wearing spandex, but you can also just go for a 30 minute walk every day to lower your stress, reduce the amount of cortisol being dumped into your blood, and even help you to lose weight. If you walk outside, the benefits are compounded. Experts who’ve gone to prestigious universities have studied the effects of being outdoors and learned it makes us happier, more cooperative, smarter, and retain our memories better, too.

You could also fork over some major cash to have a highly trained nutritionist tell you what not to eat, or you could just make some silly-simple changes like giving up one junk food a week, while replacing it with something better – like leafy greens, vegetables, fresh fruit, nuts, seeds, sprouts, and healthy oils. If you did this every week, by the end of a single year you would have completely transformed your diet.

One of the biggest components to our overall health is mental health. We’re quick to ditch the sugar if we need to squeeze into a dress for a special event, but how much do we take our daily happiness into account? What if you could feel like a million bucks every day simply by altering the neurochemicals in your brain? It’s not hard to do this. Simply increase foods and lifestyle choices that create natural happiness hormones like dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin. That means you can eat dark chocolate, laugh as often as possible, and add probiotics to your gut to feel like every day is a good day.

It is a reality where undernutrition (such as micronutrient deficiencies, stunting and wasting) , overweight, obesity and diet-related noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) like diabetes and cancer now coexist in the same countries, communities, households and even individuals. This is what is called the double burden of malnutrition which impacts not only our health but also that of future generations, the health of our planet and our economies.
