New Zealand police on Thursday arrested more than 50 people and began forcefully removing hundreds of protesters camped outside its parliament building for the last three days to protest COVID-19 vaccine mandates and tough coronavirus restrictions.

Inspired by truckers' demonstrations in Canada into a 13th day with protesters blocking two border crossings with the United States, several thousand protesters this week blocked streets near the parliament in capital Wellington with trucks, cars and motorcycles.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern acknowledged that every New Zealander had the right to protest, but said that should not disrupt others' lives. She added that the protests are not a reflection of what the majority in the country feels.
A country of five million people, New Zealand has reported just over 18,000 confirmed cases and 53 deaths since the pandemic began. About 94% of eligible people are vaccinated, with shots mandatory for some staff in frontline jobs.
Despite garnering plaudits for keeping the country virtually virus-free over the last two years, the strict restrictions now in place have become unpopular, with Ardern's approval ratings taking a hit in recent opinion polls.

New Zealand police moved in on Wednesday to end an anti-vaccine mandate protest that has disrupted the country's capital for the past three weeks, towing away cars and dismantling tents set up outside parliament.
Taking inspiration from trucker protests in Canada, hundreds of demonstrators have been blocking streets with trucks, cars and motorcycles, in a protest that has led to violent clashes. Police said 60 people were arrested during Wednesday's operation and they had "gained significant ground" in efforts to clear the protesters. At least three officers were injured, police said.
Protesters used fire extinguishers, paint-filled projectiles, homemade plywood shields and pitchforks as weapons and a cord was set up as a trip wire, police said. Social media footage showed protesters throwing full water bottles and shouting abuse at the police. Authorities used loudspeakers to warn protesters they face arrest for trespassing on parliament grounds if they refuse to leave. Pepper spray was used against some protesters.

New Zealand's COVID-19 Delta variant outbreak had spread beyond the largest city of Auckland, prompting Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Sunday to put additional regions into a snap lockdown.
There were 32 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday in Auckland, which has been in lockdown since mid-August, and two cases in the Waikato region, some 147 km south. Ardern said parts of the region will go into a five-day lockdown.
The prime minister commented on an anti-lockdown protest held Saturday in Auckland, calling it “'morally wrong” and a “slap in the face” to residents living under strict restrictions.
Ardern also announced Sunday that full COVID-19 vaccination will become a requirement for non-New Zealand citizens arriving in the country from Nov. 1.
